| Football-In Australian we are very passionate about our Aussie Rules Football. We call it footy and we have the Australian Football League. It originated in Melbourne in the 1800's and so many of the teams are originally from Melbourne. Over the past 20 years the game has become country wide and now every major state has teams in the AFL. Many of us have a favourite team that we barrack for. Country towns usually have a footy team as well. At Wedderburn our local team is called The Redbacks. |
Football in the US focuses on the National Football League or NFL. Similar to Australian Rules Football, American uses the same oval shaped football and is a contact sport. The big difference is the constant starting and stopping of the game here for strategy. Each team gets four tries to go ten yards. A "down" is a try, so there are 4 downs per ball posession. If the ball is taken to the end zone, the team earns a touchdown of 6 points, followed by an attempt to kick the ball through the goal post for an additional point called field goal. Our favorite team in this area is the Kansas City Chiefs, who don't generally play well, but we still root them on. |
